Healthy veins, beautiful legs

Rely on innovative sclerotherapy solutions for your vein health.

Spider veins are tiny, dilated veins with a diameter of up to 1 mm, positioned directly under the skin, therefore clearly visible and bothersome for many people. Especially in people with fair skin, they often appear bluish, reddish or violet-coloured through the skin. They typically develop on the outer lower and upper thighs and around the inner knee, and may be pinpoint, fan-shaped or nest-like. In more severe cases, larger areas of the leg may be affected.

Although spider veins are often seen as a purely aesthetic issue, they can be an early sign of developing venous insufficiency. More pronounced forms may cause symptoms such as heavy legs, a feeling of tension or tingling and can indicate larger, hidden varicose veins. Spider veins may therefore appear independently or along with more pronounced varicose veins.

You are not alone

Spider veins are extremely common and more widespread than many other conditions. Around 60% of all adults in Germany are affected by spider veins; surprisingly, this includes many men as well.

While the prevalence of varicose vein disease generally increases with age, studies have shown that spider veins, in particular, are already common among younger individuals.

What causes spider veins?

Spider veins may result from a congenital weakness of the connective tissue or from venous insufficiency with blood congestion. In both cases, the fine veins gradually lose their elasticity and become dilated. This dilation makes them visible as bluish or reddish to violet spider veins.

Increasing age, hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause), hormonal preparations such as the contraceptive pill, lack of exercise, standing professions, overweight and smoking can promote the development of spider veins or worsen symptoms.

Trust modern sclerotherapy to take care of your vein health.

The treatment of spider veins and small varicose veins is referred to as micro-sclerotherapy. 'Micro' refers to the use of very fine needles to treat the small veins. The doctor injects the liquid sclerosing agent Aethoxysklerol® directly into the spider veins and small varicose veins. Inside the veins, the sclerosing agent reacts with the wall of the pathologically dilated vessels. The body's own processes then cause the veins to close by adhering together. Over time, they are transformed into a strand of connective tissue, which is gradually broken down by the body and eventually disappears.

Micro-sclerotherapy with Aethoxysklerol® has been proven in numerous studies to be safe and effective, is performed on an outpatient basis and can eliminate spider veins without lasers or incisions. No anaesthesia is required since the treatment is virtually painless.

FAQs

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are small, dilated veins in the skin with a diameter of up to 1 mm. They appear bluish, reddish or violet and often occur on the lower legs or the sides of the thighs. They can occur individually or in larger clusters.

Are spider veins common?

Yes, spider veins are one of the most common venous conditions. Around 60% of adults in Germany develop these vein changes, frequently without any significant varicose veins. Spider veins are particularly common in older people, but younger individuals are also affected.

Do men get spider veins as well?

Yes, spider veins are by no means only a women's issue, even though they are less common in men and men are less likely to talk about them.

Are spider veins purely a cosmetic problem?

Spider veins are often seen as a purely cosmetic issue, but they are not always just that. More pronounced forms can cause discomfort and may be an early sign of worsening venous insufficiency, which should be treated by a doctor.

What causes spider veins?

Spider veins are caused by a congenital weakness of the connective tissue or by a weakness of the veins, in which blood pools in the venous system. Over time, the fine veins lose their elasticity, widen and become visible as bluish or reddish to violet veins.
